Beginning of the K4 Code

The application of this method leads to very interesting results for the beginning of the K4 code, especially concerning the first seven letters by using the geometric sequence DY.

This result leads to believe that the solution to the K4 code would start with FORTY YARDS. It appears interesting for at least two reasons:

  • This would be consistent with the expected content of the solution, which is supposed to indicate a precise location, in connection with the 1st clue pointing to the direction “EAST NORTHEAST”.

  • The DY sequence establishes a direct link with the DY A HR anomaly, which many people believe must play a role in the decryption of the K4 code.

Unfortunately, this method does not produce results beyond the first seven letters, and I propose two alternative solutions below to achieve a consistent message for the first line of the K4 code.

Solution n°1: Operating a rearrangement of the first layer key

The idea is that the key of the 1st layer "Clear cut against the dark blue sky, Luna's upper edge appeared …" can be rearranged by sequence of several letters.

By proceeding in this way, we can find the following solution: FORTY YARDS RUD. HOUR[H]AND EAST NORTHEAST.

 Pros

  • It gives a consistent solution linked to the indication of a specific location.

  • It reveals the sequence OH, which immediately follows the anomaly DY A HR anomaly in the K3 code, reinforcing the idea that this specific sequence contains information to create the geometric stream of letters used for coding.

  • Finally, note that the sequences AB and OH give the same result for character n°13 (solution “H”), which would allow the start of the code to be divided into three sequences of 7 letters. On the other hand, we would lose the OH sequence which would become NH :

  Cons

  • The solution has a mistake in the term “HOURWAND (instead of “HOURHAND”), unless it should be read “HOUR W AND”, the solution obviously having something to do with clocks.

  • The AB sequence used for characters 7-12 does not appear anywhere on the sculpture, with the obvious exception of the two panels coding the KRYPTOS alphabet.

  • The rearrangement of the key of the first layer appears, at this stage, arbitrary (positioning and length of the sequences) and I have not found a logical method allowing to reproduce such a result.

Solution n°2: Inclusion of a hidden K5 code in the K4 code solution

The existence of a K5 code is a serious hypothesis to take into account. In particular, the creators of the sculpture stated that such a code could not be solved without previously decoding the K4 code.

A possible hypothesis is that this code is directly embedded in the K4 code, which can lead to the appearance of sequences that do not seem to have any meaning in the K4 solution. I propose such a solution below using the full DY A HR anomaly:

Then the solution would be : "FORTY YA[E]DS BY EAST NORTHEAST with an inserted sequence framed by two Xs “XRQOLYEGX” and which could correspond to a new K5 code.

Pros

  • It allows full use of the DY A HR anomaly, which should be understood like this: the pairs pf letters DY and HR correspond each to a sequence of 2x7 letters and the isolated letter A introduces a jump between the seventh and eighth letters.

  • The sequence which does not correspond to anything “XRQOLYEGX” is framed by two X’s, and could be seen as isolated from the rest of the solution. It should also be noted that the character X is also used as a separator in the solution to the K2 code.

Cons

  • Postulating the existence of a meaningless sequence within the solution of the K4 code could be a too easy solution, even if the framing of this sequence by the two X's could moderate this assumption.

  • The last sequence of 7 letters is interrupted after 2 characters, which would suggest that K4 is coded on the basis of a 23-characters lines. Note that this 23rd position could be linked to the position of the spelling error in the K2 solution ("UNDERGRUUND" instead of "UNDERGROUND"), about which Jim Sanborn declared it has some importance.
